This walnut cased spinet by Stephanus Keene, dated 1685, required much work to the soundboard, including its removal and refitting. This picture shows the rose which was entirely missing. I carved it in spruce, a soft timber requiring constant work to retain the finest sharp chisel edges.
I was very lucky, when an apprentice, to find and collect many early 20th century chisels by Addis & Herring among others – works of art in themselves.
